Gardening

Gardening in Susanville is kinda like.....well it's not like anything I can describe.  When it snows on Memorial Day (like it did this year), you have to be able to think quick and hustle to try and save what you have already planted.  I think the only failproof things you can grow here are Strawberries and Day Lillys.  Day Lillys are good down to about -20F, so they can stand up to what Susanville winters can throw at them.

Strawberries are probably the most hearty in my garden and can withstand temps below zero and as high as 110F+.  Since this is the first year for our garden, I don't plan on harvesting a whole bunch of fruit.  When you are planting your strawberries, make sure that you give them plenty of room to grow.  Plant them about 18 inches apart with about 3-4 feet between rows.

Do this to make sure the runners they shoot off have a place to go.  You should pinch off flowers and fruit for the first year to ensure a more productive crop in the future.  To show you how new I am at this whole blogging deal, I totally forgot to take before and after pics.  So I will only be including after pics.  After planting, make sure to keep your new little plants well watered, grab a glass of lemonaid (or hot chocolate if your in Susanville) sit back, relax and let nature take it's course!!

Until Next Time,
